i got lucky with the weather the last few weeks . while i was scurrying between theatres and video stores, i was always under sunny skies . in vancouver we always get a stretch of time in february that reminds you that spring is just around the corner, before switching back to colder temps to remind you that winter still has some something to say . luckily i can now just sit back, get comfy and enjoy some sausages......................

Its that time of year again . my mad movie rush is over and its now time to separate the wheat from the chaff . the one overwhelming feeling i got from my movie dash was that this wasnt a particularily great year for movies . its wasnt a terrible one,, but there really wasnt much that made me go wow, that was a great film . let us hope for a better crop in 2010 .

unfortunately and to my shame, i have not seen any of the nominess for best documentary short or long, nor have i seen any of the nominees for best foreign film . i also didnt see anything nominated for best animated short . this kinda makes me sad cuz i know i missed some great stuff . i also missed all the nominees for best live action short but who didnt

so lets give out the hardware using the order of last years oscar presentations

Best Costume Design - i didnt get to see Australia and wouldnt go to Revolutionary Road on a bet , but even though it was a lousy movie, the one with the best costumes that i saw waseast to pick . the Mooscar goes to.......The Duchess

Best Animated Feature - I didnt get to see Bolt, but of the two other choices , i really thought one was far superior. this Mooscar goes to........Wall-E

Best Makeup - I didnt see Hellboy II, but this one was kinda easy to pick . what was the most iconoc and memorable image in makeup ? think back to halloween and you will know that this Mooscar goes to........The Dark Knight

Best Visual Effects - I saw all of these and am really not sure why Benjamin Button was nominated, so its a toss up between the two superhero movies . i kinda think that this Mooscar should go to..........Iron Man

Best Art Direction - again i didnt see Revolutionary Road (nor will i) , but this is another close category . this Mooscar goes to..........The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Best Visual Effects - another close race between the superheroes, but again the Mooscar goes to.......Iron Man

Best Actor in a Supporting Role - again i didnt see Revolutionary Road, but mannnn is this a tough one to call . this is really one time when it truley is an honour just to be nominated . four very strong contenders, but one performance really got into your head . this Mooscar goes to........Heath Ledger (Rest in Peace)

Best Actress in a Supporting Role - this category to me had much weaker nominees than the previous category . i dont think there were that many great supporting roles for women, which is a shame. although its from the worst movie of the bunch is was the best and most complete acting performance. this Mooscar goes to...........Penelope Cruz

Best Adapted Screenplay - This is a tough category , in all of them the writing was great and made you think . there was however only one that made me happy that i had seen it. this Mooscar oges to..........Slumdog Millionaire

Best Sound Editing - these next two categories are always tough to pick, especially if you havent seen all the nominees in theatres with great sound systems. saying that, one stood out to me for the sheer amount of sounds they needed to produce. this Mooscar goes to......... Wall-E

Best Sound Mixing - another toughie, but once all the sounds are mixed together though, the most memorable sonic enviroment to me had the hard driving sound of MIA . this Mooscar easily goes to Slumdog Millionaire

Best Actress in a Leading Role - like most of the oddsmakers, i think this category comes down to Winslet and Streep with props to Melissa Leo . for me i just have to close my eyes and imagine whos image made the bigger impression and the answer was clear . this Mooscar goes to........Meryl Streep

Best Film Editing - this one to me is kinda simple to pick, cuz the work involved would have been huge and the results were excellent . the other films were well done to, but this was in a class by itself . the Mooscar goes to............ The Dark Knight

Best Cinematography - this one is really quite tough due to the varying styles of their film makers . its really a toss up between two. sorry benjamin button, but the images that most impressed me were in, and the Mooscar goes to..........Slumdog Millionaire

Best Original Score - although i did not see Defiance, this one is a no brainer for me. for the most sonically beautiful soundscape of the last few years (which i posted a free d/l link toa month or two back), the Mooscar goes to........... Slumdog Millionaire

Best Song - i'm just amazed the Paper Planes wasnt nominated for this Oscar or the Grammy, the song was everywhere and its great. luckily two other songs from its film were nominated . this Mooscar goes to MIA for O Saya from Slumdog Millionaire

Best Original Screenplay - this category is always full of great movies and this year is no exception. i didnt see Happy-Go-Lucky, but i am going to roll back the calendar to the spring and award a great little movie that not many people saw . for its unusual and compelling story , this Mooscar goes to..........In Bruges

Best Actor in a Leading Role - wow this is a hard category to pick . although people are saying this a race between Sean Penn & Mickey Rourke , that is doing great disservice to the other three nominees . these were all passionate and stirring performances . so hard to pick one above the rest . they all did such a good job . again i will close my eyes and see which image is the strongest . ummmmmmmmmmmmmm this Mooscar goes to...........Sean Penn for Milk

Best Director & Best Picture - as usual my opinion is that you cant have a best film that doesnt get the nod for best direction . you cant have one without the other . luckily the nominees in both categories are the same . all of these are worth a look . in 5th is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, in 4th is The Reader, in 3rd is Frost/Nixon, 2nd is Milk and these 2 Mooscars go to...........Slumdog Millionaire

as a reminder, please do not use these picks for filling out your office or party oscar pool . its not that i have anything against gambling , its just that my picks and the academy's do not often match up . i have never even come close to winning an oscar pool and using my picks will undoubtedly result in you throwing away your hard earned money . these picks are just hw i saw things this year
