thats 50ish for my non-metric visitors from the USA, Liberia and Myanmar. what it means is that its bloody cold today . i shouldnt be wearing a sweater in midsummer . unfortunately, we've also had a bit of rain so thats gotten in the way of a good long rehab walk . instead i've been quickly nipping out between rain showers a couple times a day. a long walk would give me a change of scenery though . its pretty boring when you only have a limited amount of strength and nothing but the tv to keep you company. i am improving daily however, so thats good . i even managed to get through another links archive, so here are some sausages...............

the convalescence continues . every day i feel a little stronger , but not nearly as strong as i think i feel . i learned that the hard way on the weekend when i was stranded in the park without my nitroglycerin and had a bout of angina, which was really kinda scary . luckily i was able to make it home safely , the nitro worked quickly and a day of solid sleep got me back on track . i think the recovery is going to take a tad longer than i would like , but such is life . i just wont go anywhere without the nitro . that one lesson i learned . i guess i better not hop up and down while i have it on me though or else it might explode like nitroglycerin always does in old movies and cartoons :p
i saw a couple more movies in between naps and this is what i thought of them........
Into The Wild - this was my favourite movie of last year , perhaps my favourite of the last 20 years . seeing it again on dvd confirmed to me how f'ing awesome this movie is and i am still stunned that it received no recognition . this is a well acted , beautifully filmed story of poignancy and freedom . you will be thinking about this movie long after you watch it . it is haunting , it is joyous, it is a wonderful journey . i love this movie . it stirs my soul
Color Me Kubrick - this movie has been beckoning to me from the shelf for a few months now . everytime i go in , there is john malkovich toasting to me with a glass of champagne . i finally relented and its quite a nifty little movie . its about a con man who spent years posing as stanley kubrick and bilking anyone who will gove him money for a shot at supposed fame . its a fun movie . its not great , but worth it especially if you are a kubrick fan . its amazing how kubrick took ownership of certain pieces of music , so when you hear them in this , it takes you back to the many great movies he directed . if you look closely , you will also notice that some of the actors are kinda familiar . in fact there are quite a few actors from a lot of kubricks films , which just adds to the fun . if you like malkovich & kubrick , give this film a shot
Superbad - if i was a sassy teenager again , this would be the greatest movie ever made . its a teen film loaded with juvenile laughs , that doesnt treat the audience like morons like so many american films do . the only time this movie is dumb is when its comdeically required . it reminded me of goofy things that i used to do when i was that age and the humour is perfect for annoying prudes . and isnt annoying prudes something we should all aspire to ? . this movie isnt for everyone, but if you want to remember what it was like to be young and stupid again , check it out
Spiderman 3 - i didnt particularily like parts one & two of this series and part three really wasnt that different . the special effects are good , but the interpersonal relationships have been the death to the adventure in all three . i dont want to know about their personal lives . find a bad guy and deal with him . thats all i want from a superhero pic . i want to escape into the fantasy and not have syrupy relationship problems . if they make a part 4 , i think i'll pass
Charlie Barlett - this movie was quite a pleasant surprise . it was recommended by the cute dvd clerk (oh if i only was that young again) and its another teen movie about a sassy and vulnerable student who is trying to find his way through public high school after being kicked out of every private school around . its about kids trying to fit in and find themselves as they are thrust into growing up . the movie is a tad subversive , but in a good way . it doesnt treat kids like they are idiots . they arent . sure they have a lot to learn , but thats what life is all about . this movie packs a lot of charm and is quite entertaining , but definitely made for a teen audience
Bee Movie - it took me 4 hours to watch this movie mostly because i was falling asslep through it . sure i was recovering from my aforementioned angina scare , but despite that , this is a movie that makes a nap very likely . its very techincially terrific animation . its just not what i expected from jerry seinfeld . i remember once hearing advice to someone who was going to play carnegie hall and they were told to just do their act . dont change it . people are coming to see you and they will know if you change it . thats kinda how i felt . i wanted a more adult movie or at least adult jokes that were too subtle for young children but adults got . weve all seen the seinfeld sitcom. this movie just lacked that comic sensibility . it forgot about the adults and you are left with a nice cute, but dull kids movie . maybe what they should have done is let larry david make an animated film . he wouldnt pull any punches and that would be a movie i would prefer to see
Death at a Funeral - sorry but there doesnt apperar to be a link to an official movie site for this film . when i first heard about this movie , people were raving about how funny it was . "a classic british comedy" . so i was kinda disappointed when i saw it . its not a bad film , but it certainly wasnt as funny as people thought it was . its a comedy of errors . it has a quite a few chuckles , but never had me laughing out loud . its mildy witty, so if you like that kinda thing , check it out . if not, pass
The Bank Job - i like heist films and i also like british gangster films, so this was a good movie for me . its a supposedly true story of one of the biggest bank robberies in british history. it involves everyone from lowlife criminals , to the parlialment, to the underworld, to MI-5 or MI-6, to buckingham palace . its a tangled web that plays out in a nicely suspenseful way . there is betrayal from all sides and it is a thourougly enjoyable, well paced romp . check it out
alrighty , time for a nap
Enjoy !!
thanks god for movies , cuz recovering from a heart attack is f'ing boring . even if you do feel like going for a walk (and its bean sunny and beautiful here lately) , you cant go too far or for too long . the good thing is that i no longer stagger around like some rummy and am walking with a lot more stability and purpose . recovery is still gonna take a while though . i am just sooooo tired most of the time . luckily i am on a roll for seeing really good movies from the video store . so far there hasnt been a bad one in the bunch . this is what i saw last week..................
In Bruges - i really like a good anti-hero movie and this is certainly an excellent one . its about two hit men who are hiding out in a small belgian town after a botched assassination . the men are polar opposites and are forced to put up with each other until their crazy boss contacts them . the cast is excellent . colin farrel is very good as the restless hitman , ralph fiennes is excellent as the lunatic, but principled boss , but it is brendan gleeson who steals the show with a sweet and complex performance as the elder hitman doling out advice . this movie has all kinds or twists and turns and is a lot of laughs . they swear a lot , but its character appropriate and in no way should stop you from missing this gem
Control - this movie is about the life & suicide of ian curtis , lead singer of the seminal english band Joy Division . its really well done but its bleak . beautifully shot in black & white , its an excellent uk cast , but with very sombre subject matter . if you are a fan of joy didvision or like movies about lives spiralling downwards , you'll want to check it out for sure , but if not you might want to give it a pass . if you are really lookinf for an entertaining film about the manchester music scene , i'd highly recommened 24 Hour Party People instead of this one . its much more entertaining
The Savages - this is another excellent movie . an actiing tour de force between philip seymour hoffman , laurta linney & philip bosco . its starts out as an estranged family reunites when two kids pick up their abusive & dying father and decide to care for him through his last days of dementia , as well as dealing with their own personal problems . ok right now you're probably thinking , 'i bet that sucks' , but belive me it doesnt . this screen is wickedly funny and incredibly poignant . the 2 kids hash out all their differences as they go throught their complex emotional journies . the best part is the ending is perfect . there is nothing too sappy or saccaharine and i dont know if it was the meds or heart related trauma, but the very last scene of this movie before the credits had me bawling like a little baby (in a good way) . this is a very good movie
Be Kind Rewind - this was a nifty little film about 'sweding' movies . after a freak accident causes all of a video stores vhs tapes to be erased , jack black and his buddies decide to film their own versions of the movies in order to save theire business . there is a lot of affection in this movie . not only of people but of place as well . its also a subtle study of a city in decay thats shows that even in dire strait , there is still a community that cares....somewhere . jack black isnt too over-the-top-jack-black in this , so this is a fun movie you probably would want to check out
Walk Hard - this movie is hilarious . john c reilly is great as a pseudo johnny cash in this spoof of music bio pics . its just such a dead on satire , but done lovingly . i cant really say much more than to just say dont miss it . its f'ing hilarious
Live Free or Die Hard - john mclean is back and they didnt screw it up . i'm mean really thats all you need to know . if you liked the previous die hard movies , you'll like this one . its a decent story with good action scenes and a good cast . i liked it
Knocked Up - i finally got around to seeing this movie . it was one of those films that people come up to you and say 'oh you gotta see it' . for whatever reason it took me a while but i saw it yesterday . its funny , but i wasnt raving about how funny it was . i laughed and had no probs with the movie at all . this movie is sweet and after hearing how raunchy it was , i was surprised at how raunchy it wasnt . i figgered it could use a little more raunch . in fact i enjoyed the director commentary more than the movie . its still a good movie though , just not great
I'm Not There - i saw this in the theatres and waited for the dvd so i could check out the director commentaries . this is such a good movie . if you dont like bob dylan , you will prolbably like the craft of this movie . its really entertaining , well acted , well editted and i am sure this will be one of those movies that you will see something new in it everytime you check it out . i especially like how they saved 'like a rolling stone' for the credits and give you one killer performance of 'Ballad of a Thin Man' . very cool . this movie is awesome and its deep and its fantastical and its real . what else do you want in a movie ? oh yeah the comentaries were good too
John Waters - This Filthy World - god bless john waters . this is a one man show in which john takes a stroll down memory lane and reflects on his life , his movies and his career and there are genuine from the gut laughs all the way through . the man is a raconteur . he is self effacing , insightful , filthy , clever and above all funny as hell . if you cant bring yourself to watch his movies (especially his early ones) give this a shot . hes funny as hell
ok thats it for now . i gotta go lie down for a bit
Enjoy !
yep folks , i'm back a little early from my summer retreat , cuz shortly after going to bed after being at a friend's wedding last saturday night , i had a wee heart attack . if you are surprised to hear this , imagine how i felt . there was no warning and at first i thought it might have just been a bad bout of indigestion from something i ate at the wedding . alas , i had classic symptoms of angina , which was confirmed after i finally drove myself into town and to the hospital . from there i was doped and poked and tested and drugged and eventually sent on a 3 hour ambulance ride to Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria , where i had an agioplasty where they inserted of a stent to open the offending artery that caused the attack (30 second animation that kinda gives you the gist of what they did , HERE . 5 hours later i was relased and was lucky enough to have an uncle who drove me to the ferry , so i could return here this past tuesday . Thanks Uncle Harry !
for the next little while , i'll be taking handfuls of expensive medicines , getting blood tests and taking lots of increasingly longer walks until i get back to normal . i dont really have the strength to sit at the puter for too long , so i dunno if i'll get to any sausages for a bit , but i'll prolly watch a few movies so expect a rivulet post in the near future (fyi In Bruges is f'ing awesome)
just for the record , i am fine . a little weak sure , but i am definitely on the mend . in no time at all , i will able to do The Twist AND The Kitty Kat !!
Enjoy !
