Rivulets

with all the rainy weather we've been having this year , its given me a good excuse to check out a couple of movies . the cheap theatre still has free parking and a taco time in the lobby , so i'm all set with one stop . even better is that this year's movies have all been pretty good....................

Into The Wild - This Movie is F'ing Awesome !! honestly. its one of the best movies i have seen in years . directed by sean penn , the movie follows the journey of a young man as he drops out of society to live a free life without complications . at least thats the plan . the non-linear story traverses north america with some of the most beautiful cinematography you'll see in a film . it also has some pretty cool tunes from eddie vedder who does the soundtrack . its a movie about freedom . its about a personal journey , but is in no way a political film . it has a strong ensemble cast and when you leave the theatre you will be transformed . and you'll have a major case of wanderlust . an amazing film & a cool website

No Country For Old Men - ahhhh the Coen brothers . has it been 4 movies since their last really good one ? (thats seems to be the formula anyhow). well this surely is a good one . not as comical as some of their others , but more of a return to the 'blood simple' style . sure its going to have its funny moments , but the real feeling you leave with is quite a bleak one . tommy lee jones & josh brolin are the main flawed protagonists who must deal with one of the coldest and remorseless killers who has ever roamed east texas , played by javier bardem . the pacing of the movie is deliberately slow which adds to the feeling of impending evil and the dialogue is excellent . if you like the coens, check it out

The Darjeeling Limited - this is another movie about dropping out for a personal journey , but this time directed by wes anderson . the bulk of the movie takes place on a train in india where 3 brothers (owen wilson, adrian brody & jason schwartzman) try to reconicile with one another a year after the death of their father . what unfolds is the rekindling of a strong bond between them despite their dysfunctional family . the movie is both funny and compelling and well worth seeing . it even has a short film before the feature with natalie prortman with one of the funnier songs that you'll ever hear sung by peter sarstedt . and like any wes anderson film the soundtrack is amazing . i really enjoyed it . groovy website too

American Gangster - cool . denzel washington & russell crowe . glowing reviews . i couldnt wait to see it. it just didnt live up to the hype . dont get me wrong , its a good movie and well worth seeing , just dont go out of your way to see it . the movie is well acted and the story is true , there was just something missing . there were interesting things about the drug trade and its breed of ruthlessness , but somehow the pacing was off for me . the cineamtography was kinda weak . the cameras rarely stopped moviing and they used that grainy feel , so i dont really think it will matter if you wait for this one to come out in dvd . good but not great

Elizabeth - The Golden Age - this was another movie that was kinda disappointing . cate blanchett is her usual amazing self and clive owen was an excellent raleigh , but the movie dwelled to much in the personal lives and not the history . at the end of the first movie we saw emerge into a strong queeen who takes control of things and prepare herself to rule . in this movie though she seems to have taken a few steps back emotionally and you have to watch her wallow too much in her romantic fancies . its not that interesting to watch , though admirably performed . so i found my self waiting for the defeat of the spanish armada , but the movie must have run our of money cuz the filming of the sea battle was short and cheap . i think the movie tried to be too many things , when it could have been simpler and so much more

Rendition - i quite enjoyed this movie . its about the american practice of outsourcing people for torture
(lets call it what it is) . it has an excellent cast with jake gyllenahaal , jk simmons , reese witherspoon , peter sarsgaard , omar metwally & meryl streep) who are all terrific . the movie takes a matter of fact approach to the process and it explores the machinations of this despicable behaviour without getting too preachy or whiny . theres even a surprise or two . i wasnt sure if i was going to like this one , but i really did . check it out

Some older ones that i finally got around to seeing...........

300 - i had heard both good and bad about this movie . the bad usually came from people whning that it wasnt historically accurate . well no kidding , its a comic book on film . its not intended to be a history lesson . instead you get some really cool visuals and an interesting fictional story . if you can shake the ancient greek historical accuracy thang , this movie was really fun to watch . well acted , well shot and good fun .

Hot Fuzz - i was looking forward to this movie . it was by the same people who did sean of the dead and i loved that . i just guess that there is more material about zombies than there is about big city cop vs small town metality in britain . the movie starts of well and is funny at first , but the movie just seems to run out of steam . the joke got old for me bcause they didnt develop it through the movie . it was one note and a note i have seen before . its still worth checking out , especially if you are new to brit cinema . good website

The Number 23 - this one is probably the biggest dog in this post . it has a good cast with jim carey and virginia madsen , but the movie never gets to the point where the numerical obsession develops any suspense . i knew right away what the outcome was going to be , the lack of surprise made the ending weak . without suspense , the constant appearance of the number 23 got kinda silly

Seraphim Falls - if you dont mind a little implausibility , this was actually kinda a fun little western starring pierce brosnan and liam neeson . yeah they dwell on pierce's suffering a tad too much and the ending is just ridiculous , but there is still a lot to enjoy . the visuals are excellent and the acting is really good . brosnan has been turning up in some interesting indie films lately and you gotta admire him for that . they arent making that many westerns anymore , so you gotta watch em when you can . if theres nothing else on the dvd rack , check it out

Death of a President - i saw this one a while back and what surprises me now , is i dont remember a thing about it . that doesnt bode well for a movie thats trying to make a point about the state of the world . i remember the premise . george bush is assassinated in 2007 and the secret service reacting to it . the movie just hasnt left me with any with any message . i wasnt appalled by the concept of the movie . it just seems that in better hands , i would have remembered the movie , but to be honest , i cant remember a thing about it . that cant be a good sign

i should be seeing some more soon , so keep posted
