Since i've been back in town waiting for a slew of different things to occur , when normally i would be a lazy bum at the cabin , i've managed to cacth up on a few recent dvd releases . for the most part , the summer crop of dvds has been pretty good . this is great , because it fills up the time i've spent waiting by the phone......and waiting ......and waiting . here's what i thought , in order of viewing.......
Winter Passing - this was an interesting though albeit an odd tale of a young drug addicted woman returning home to her dysfunctional family . the daughter of emotionally distant writers-first parents , she returns to dig up her past (for money) and what she finds is an oddball collection of quirky people who are all dealing with their own problems . what results is a an interesting journey of healing . the cast (zooey descanel , ed harris , will ferrel) is very good and is the reason you keep watching . though this movie probably isnt for everyone , i enjoyed it
The Good Sheperd - this was a very interesting movie about the machinations of the world of cloak and dagger . directed by roert deniro , it delves into the recruitment and rise of a spy master played by matt damon . you get a real sense of the tangled , confusing and ruthless lives these people live . the strong cast includes deniro , angelina jolie alec baldwin, william hurt , timothy hutton, joe pesci and john tuturro . the writing is well paced and though it is a tad long , it keeps you involved right to the end . if you like spy movies that are more graham greene and less james bond, you'll like this .
Venus - when i first heard about this movie , there was a lot of blather about it being about a dirty old man lusting over an young woman . well sure , there is that , but these judgemental & moralizing buffoons certainly didnt look any further . there is a lot going on in this movie and the dirty old man , is the sly and ever charismatic peter o'toole in one of his strongest performances ever . he plays an aging actor trying to deal with his loss of youth and prowess as he slowly fades into obscurity . its about loneliness and ego , but its also about friendship and growth , the movie starts out one way , but in the end things work their way out and the feeling is deifinitely one of warmth . though not for everyone , i really liked it
Breach - while doing my annual pre mooscar movie blitz , i kept seeing the trailer for this movie about the biggest leak in american intelligence history . robert hanssen was an fbi agent in charge of finding the leak . unfortunately , he was the leak . the damage he did is unmeasurable and his story is fascinating . unfortunatetly , even though he was being played by the always great chris cooper , the story revolved around a minor fbi agent who only had a small role in hanssen's capture . i was disappointed about this , because its hanssen's story that is really interesting , not eric o'neill's . what a waste of chris cooper . if you dont know the story , maybe the movie is okay . otherwise its nothing great . check it out when its on network tv . i just wish they made the movie about the subject of the investigation
The Night Listener - this was a small little film that i hadnt heard about and i was glad to have stumbled upon it . its based on the real life story of armistead maupin , who becomes involved in the life of helpless and extremely ill boy who is living a life on the run from his tormentors........ or is he ? robin williams plays the author gabriel noone (they changed maupin's name for some reason) rory culkin plays the boy and toni collete is amazing as the boy's caretaker . their mysterious interrelation is what the movie is all about and i wont spoil the ending here . its a very good movie , check it out
The Astronaut Farmer - this movie has an interesting premise . a small time farmer chases his lifelong dream of going into space by building a rocket in his barn . billy bob thorton is the farmer who battles bureaucrats who want to stop him at all costs . of all the movies in this posting , this one is the most formulaic . thats not to say thats a bad thing , it just has a couple of moemets that are too golly gosh and unecessary . theres too many times when you know exactly what the next scene is going to be . that being said , its a good movie if you are feeling brain dead and want to veg on the couch and not challenge your brain
Factory Girl - this movie got panned by the critics when it came out and i dont really understand why . this was the first time i saw sienna miller in anything and she was incredible as andy warhol's "superstar" edie sedgewick . this movie takes a long look at warhols factory and does not pull any punches . from what i have read this movie seems to be quite accurate ,. they even had to change bob dylan's name to prevent legal action . the most amazing thing about the movie is following the descent of edie from her life of privelege (though dysfunctional privelege) to her sad end . my only quibble and its a small one , was that there wasnt enough velvet underground . i dont know if that was a legal thing but it should have been there . the cast and story are very good and if you like movies about the late 60s new york art scene , i would say definitely check it out .
A Prairie Home Companion - robert altman's best film ever . this movie is excellent . great cast , great story , excellent cinematography and funny as hell . the story is also sweet , involving and poignant . i had kinda avoided this movie for a while . i'm not sure why , but i'm really glad i saw it . its like watching a stage play from both the front of stage and behind the curtains . there is just so much to see in this movie and it lets you voyeuristically see the behind the secnes actions and motivations of the show . absolutely amazing . RIP Robert Altman , like a great showman , you left me wanting more
Zodiac - this movie uses the actual case files to frame the story of san francisco's infamous zodiac killings from their start in 1968 to it being a cold case being investigated by a san francisco chronicle editorial cartoonist . the movie makes the case for one prominent suspect , but this case remains offically unsolved to this day . the movie is a tad long , but there is enough story , good acting and pacing to make it well worth seeing
I'm not sure if any of these will make it to mooscar season , but you never know . still a decent selection for lounging about on the sofa . enjoy
sis flew into town this week and has now safely ensconsed herself with mum over at the cabin , while i sit in the city waiting for a jaw surgeon . its weird being without a car , (i loaned it to sis) ,cuz it seems not having it available has caused my brain to think about hopping in the car and going somewhere . of course if i had the car , none of these ideas would pop into my mind . since my consultation with a dental surgeon is tomorrow and its raining outside , i may as well post some links ..................

i'm just in town for a couple of days in order for a doc appointment and to get get a consultation with a dental suregon . it seems that the absess i had is not healing well and it may be due to a rather large cyst that has formed just above my jaw which will have to be surgically removed . i'm not sure if the cyst has anything to do with the stomach probs or the iron thang , but i gave blood yesterday and will know better on thursday . i'm feeling slightly better , but not as better as i am suposed to feel . hopefully i just need more time .
