now that the obligatory best film nomineee medley is over , lets get down to handing out some hardware . i tried to find the list of the awards presentation order at teh oscars , but had luck , so i'll start small and and save the best for last using this list .
Art Direction
apologies to harry potter and king kong . i never saw them . good night and good luck ? dunno why it was nominated here . it realy comes down to the remaining two . pride & prejudice was a good movie , but the art direction seemed to be standard brit movie fare . for showing me a whole new world and a society that i had never seen before , the first Mooscar goes to Memoirs of a Geisha
Cinematography
this was the year of grainy close up filming with hand held cameras . not too nice to look at and worse if you had been having labrynth probs like i was . movies shouldnt make you seasick lol . there were some good exceptions though . good night & good luck ? when i first reviewed it i was saddened that they didnt use the black & white with better effectiveness . it would have made a good movie better. apologies to new world . brokeback ? it made the rocky mountains on beautiful blue skies look dingy . this is a tough call for the last 2 . both exceptional . Batman looked beautiful , but this movie had stunning visuals throughout . the Mooscar goes to Memoirs of a Geisha
Costume Design
walk the line ? mrs hendersopn presents ? oh please . charlie and the chocolate factory and pride and prejudice were good , but this Moscar goes (yet again) to Memoirs of a Geisha
Documentary Feature
apologies to darwin's nightmare and streetfight . march of the penguins was good , but it seemed more a good tv show on the discovery channel good . Enron was more pbs frontline good . we are left with the real stand out . the movie that had much more going for it than its subject . this Mooscar goes to Murderball
Documentary Short
i dont think that in my lifetime , i have ever seen a nominee in this category . so no apologies and no Mooscar
Film Editting
odd nominees this year . when i think of these movies only one strikes me as worthy of a nomination . it seems to mee there were many movies that deserved the award more than these five . cinderella man , munich , walk the line and the constant gardened all seemed pretty ordinary in terms of editting . using these nominess the mooscar goes to Crash
Foreign Film
i have a confession to make *weep* i havent seen any of these nominees *sob* i feel so dirty *sniff* Mooscars for Everyone in order to appease my shame
Make Up
apologies to star wars and narnia . cinderella man ? yeah right . seems to me there are some nominees missing here . oh well . no Mooscar
Best Score
this is a tough category . all were really good . all the scores made their movies better . in the end though , one to me stood out . it was toe tappingly happy with just a tinge of melancholy and it helped its movie more than the others . i can still hum it after all this time . thats gotta count for something . this Moooscar goes to Brokeback Mountain
Best Song
wow . no nominees that you only heard while the credits were rolling . well done academy ! thats always been a pet peeve of mine . 'travellin thru' and 'in the deep' are good songs . they just seemed to be placed in somewhat contrived situations in their otherwise excellent movies . i just think 'its hard out there for a pimp' was more integral to the film . the way you got to see them create the song and the joy and pride in achieving something that wasnt ugly in an otherwise ugly environment was what that movie was all about . this Mooscar , whole-heartedly , goes to Hustle and Flow
Short Films - Live Action & Animated
apologies to all the nominees in both categories . didnt see ya , no Mooscars
Sound Editing
apologies to King Kong and less apologies to war of the worlds cuz everyone said it sucked . i dint see them . it also strikes me that there are lots of missing nominations missing in this category . i did see the remaining film and it was well made from top to bottom , so this Mooscar goes to Memoirs of a Geisha
Sound Mixing
apologies to narnia , king kong and to a lesser extent war of the worlds , but i didnt see ya . memoirs of a geisha was excellent , but i still remember the foot stomping excitement of the opening and closing scenes of the last . its too bad the middle of the movie couldnt live up to the techical quality of its sound . this Mooscar goes to Walk the line
Visual Effects
apologies to all 3 nominess . just why are there only 3 nominess in this category ? is there a quota ? there were certianly many other contenders in this category *shrugs* oh well no Mooscar
ahhhh finally getting to the categories people care about . starting with the writing Mooscars , which historically have been an excellent barometer for quality films . check out a list of writing nominess or winners , because if you rent dvds based on those lists , you will see much better films than the winners of best film oscar list
Best Original Screen Play
my apologies to Squid and the Whale and Matchpoint . i hear you are both excellent films . Syriana was interesting , but jumbled and could have dug a little deeper . good night & good luck was good, but nor great . for a purely original and well crafted script , this Mooscar just has to go to Crash
Best Adapted Screenplay
Apologies to history of Violence . its out on dvd next week grrrr . munich , i thought was sloppy and at times insipid . i didnt know brokeback wasnt original . the script was good though . constant gardener was perhaps the best adaptation of a lecarre novel ever put on screen . however one movie took its source and really breathed new life into it and gave us so much more . without a doubt , this Mooscar goes to Capote
Best Animated Feature
apologies to Howl's Moving Castle . The Corpse Bride was a very good film . it made corpses and spiders fun ! its just unfortunate that it us up for the award in the same year that nick park made his first feature length film on his won terms . without even one scintilla of doubt , this Mooscar goes to the ever cheesy (wensleydale , that is) Wallace and Gromit - The Curse of the WereRabbit
Best Supporting Actor
apologies to william hurt . you're the only acting nominee i didnt get to see , but i'll see you next week . btw , where was donald sutherland for pride & prejudice or mickey rourke (my personal choice) for his amazing stint as the hitman in sin city ? for the others , theres been a lot of buzz for paul giamatti for a standard bnoxing manager role (making up for a non win for sideways?) , jake gyllenhaal (the gay cowboything) and george clooney , but it seems to me , there was on performance that was way more compelling than the rest . you will not forget this character . you will hate him , but you wont forget him . The Mooscar goes to Matt Dillan in Crash
Best Supporting Actress
2 things . where the hell are the nominations for gong li and michelle yeoh for memoirs of a geisha ? its criminal neither was nominated . secondly , in my opinion , this is where reese witherspoon should have been nominated and not best actress . oh well , lets look at these five . michelle williams . i kinda have sympathy for her since her so called "christian" high school has condemned her for taking a part in a 'gay movie' , but it wasnt that great a part or performance . same with rachel weisz . to me it comes down to the remaining three . frances mcdormand is always amazing , as is catherine keener . both add a ton of depth to their respective films , but one actress was the heart and soul of her movie . she was the glue that held the movie together . this Mooscar goes to Amy Adams for Junebug
Best Actor
for terence howard the award is just being nominated for this performance . i'm not sure why david strathairn was nominated , although he did capture murrow in a way that joaquin phoenix never did with johnny cash . as for tacit homosexuality, the performance by heath ledger was good , but none of these guys came even close to getting my vote . only one character came to life through an excellent acting performance . it would be a crime if this Mooscar didnt go to Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote
Best Actress
First of all , Ziyi Zhang should have been nominated for her performance in memoirs of a geisha . the fact that judi dench and charlize theron for roles over her is appaling . those two could play these ordinary roles in their sleep . no great stretch . secondly , i like reese witherspoon , but to me this is more of a supporting role and in it , i never saw june carter . it was more a legally brunette generic country singer . that said , the choice between the final two is a difficult one for me . keira knightly is what made pride & prejudice . a lesser actress would have killed the movie . its really a coin toss for me , but i am going to give extra points for the brave choice to portray a transgendered person in america . she did a very competent jop in a good movie that a lot of people will pribably never see . This Mooscar goes to Felicity Huffman in Transamerica
Best Director & Best Film
its never made sense to me how a movie can win best picture and the director doesnt . luckily this year the 5 nominess are the same 5 movie , so i am going to treat them as one combined category . i didnt like Munich . i didnt like the choices spielberg made in telling the story and it suffered for it . a colder telling of the tale would have beeen much better imo . goodnight & good luck is a good movie with a good message , but they didnt use the black & white in a very cinematic way . this movie could have been gorgous looking and the visuals could have delivered its very important message of truth in media with much greater impact . Brokeback Mountain was a good movie . however , it didnt make my top 5 for 2005 and wont improve in standing here . the choice to me is between Crash and Capote . two very good movies . one dealing with a complicated environment of racism and one dealing with a complicated man . both have great casts . both look really good . both are excellent examples of how issues are made up of shades of grey and are not black & white or left & right . a message that really needs to be driven home . the canadian angel on one shoulder wants me to vote for Crash's director , but also reminds me capote was filmed outside of winnipeg (brokeback mountain was filmed in alberta) . the indie angel on my other shoulder wants me to vote for Capote , but also reminds me that neither Crash or the other three nominees in this category are "hollywood films " . decisons decisions . i have two Mooscars to hand out , but it would be a tad hypocritical to split them up now . hmmmmmm . toss a coin ? hmmmmm . crash made a deep emotional impression on me . capote made a deep intellectual impression . hmmmmmm .
the Two Mooscars go to ..........Capote
man this posting took longer to do than i thought it would . jon stewart will be starting the show in just over an hour . i think hes going to do a really good job . he's the perfect choice . smart & funny .

this years race to see as many nominated movies (amongst others) before the oscars has come to an end . with dizziness and dvd availability i think i have seen all that i can , so i shall spend the next couple of days figuring out who i should hand out the Mooscars to on sunday . these are the films i have seen since the last review . i dunno why i havent done this before , but from now on i'll try and include links to the movie's web page
Transamerica - this is a story of a pre-op tansgendered m2f , who must make a a journey across america in order to resolve a major issue from her past . its an interesting tale which explores the issues of this community while not geting too preachy about it . felicity huffman is very good throughout the movie . my only issue with the movie is that it needed a bit more life in its charcters . i know a couple of people who have gone thru this and they have much less dull lives . maybe its a quibble and i know the awkward & sad backstory was meant to payoff at the end , i just think the movie had let its characters have more charater in the movie . its still worth seeing though
Proof - this movie was a lot more enjoyable than i had expected . i'm not a big gwynneth paltrow fan , but she is very good in this movie and should have been nominated for an oscar (though it might make up for the one she won for shakespeare in love) . in this movie she plays the daughter of a mentaly unsatble math professor looking for one last great math proof before he dies and his daughters attempt to make him proud . its explores the dynamic of mental health and obligation quite honestly and is very well acted . a good movie
North Country - when i rented this , i did so only cuz of its oscar nomination for best actress . i thought it was going to be norma rae about sex descrimination and i was right . it was . what i couldnt understand was why theron got nominated . she didnt deserve it . it was a cookie cutter part that could be played by anyone . the always good frances mcdormand does deserve her nomination . she is great as usual . as for the movie , if it motivates anyone to treat all people better in the workplace , then thats a good thing . it wasnt a movie meant for me . i dont treat people differently because of gender and i have never ever seen anything even approaching this behaviour in any workplace i have been in . so it just didnt ring true to me. its based on a true story . i just think the movie was too heavily filtered to convey info than to make it realistic . if you are looking for a movie to yell at the screen "men are pigs" , give it a whirl . if not , dont
Domino i dont know how many reviews or people told me that this movie sucked and should be avoided . its a tony scott film . you know it will be gimmick loaded . and mannnnn did they load this one up with perhaps too much camera gimmickery and editting . when it ended however . i kinda wanted to see more . the acting and the story were interesting and it was an intersting and entertaining glimpse into the world of bounty hunting . keira knightly and mickey rourke were excellent throughout . this is a very cool movie and worth checking out
The Weatherman - when i saw the ads for this last summer , i couldnt wait for the chance to go see it . thats why it was so disappointing when i actually did . i had come into it expecting to see a quirky and funny story , instead i got a story about boring and miserable people trapped in miserable and boring lives . i kept asking myself , why would make a movie where no one in it is even remotely interesting . i never bought into cage being a tv news personality and after that it was just him dealing with his miserable life . what a disappointment
Nine Lives - here is another movie that was built up to be great and wasnt . this movie is nine stories of miserable women whose lives are trapped in various different miserable and depressing lives . some segments are well acted , some are terrible . its a good ensemble cast , but they arent given anything to do except wallow in their misery . with a cast this good why not make the effort and make nine stories about interesting strong women who dont live contrived obligatory lives and have real positive things going for them . instead of this crap
Tristram Sandy : A cock and Bull story - (warning - like the book and the movie , the site is kinda a non site... an intentional failed attempt at a web site you should think of as funny, if you get it that is) - this is a very funny movie . its a movie of lawrence sterne's novel that can never be made into a movie ... so they didnt . instead what you get is an hilarious look at an attempt to make a real movie where the actors run in and out of their roles and their lives . their are all kinds of inside jokes about movie making , art and literature in this movie . the humour is both subtle and in your face . the ensemble cast of british actors is excellent. go see this movie if you like intelligent comedy and literature . its very funny
Pride & Prejudice - this is a period piece that has two balls and giggling girls all within the first 15 minutes and i didnt hate it ! i cant believe it . this is probably the best attempt at a austin novel movie that i have seen . i'm just not a fan of the genre , but i like how they made this movie . they boiled down the story to the essentials and then cast great actors . keira knightly is again very good and worthy of her nomination and donald sutherland should have got one . it is beautifully shot and if you ar forced to see a period piece , make it this one
The Ice Harvest - uhoh maybe the john cusack movie quality barometer is in need of repair . you'd think an antihero film with him an billybob involving stealing money form the mob would be very entertaining . it just isnt . i kinda felt that maybe the script hadnt been finished before they started filming . the movie had no real direction after the premise and then it just stops dead in its tracks when oliver platt enters the story . after that it never recovers . the only good thing is that its under 90 minutes long so you dont lose to much of your life . its to bad . this could have been a great movie , but instead its one to avoid
Memoirs of a Geisha - perhaps i have saved the best for last in this post . this is an excellent movie . its well written , well shot and amazingly well acted . how this movie didnt garner oscar nominations can only speak to racism . the actresses in this movie blow all the other nominees away . i just dont get it . these are strong parts for women and because they are asian they dont get nomintaed . unbelievable ! this movie is the story of a a young girl who is sold into a geisha house and is about her life in that world . it is a fascinating and conniving world that you have never seen before and the cinematography is amazing . what a great film . it deserved many more nominations . hell it deserves many oscars . lets hope the academy can one day move beyond this kind of intolerance and nominate obviously great preformances like these . see this film
