Olympic *weep* Sausages *weep* III *weep*

Canadian Girls Kick Ass !! thats what the tshirts say and they they're right . our women's hockey team did us proud , winning their second straight olympic gold medal . the men's team however was a different story . out in the quarter finals . sure it was against the russians and you just knew that one of the medalists from salt lake playing so early in the draw was going to head home . that , however , was canada's fault . i dont know if we were playing injured , not playing as a team or taking teams lightly , but we were beaten fair and square . russian boys kicked our asses and we deserved to lose . about the only good thing i can glean from their loss is that i wont have to get up at 5 am to watch the men's gold medal game . i will say this though , hopefully in 2010 we will pick the team on how well the team is playing just before the olympics start and not leave 5 of the nhl's top scorers sitting in front of the tv back home instead of playing .

all things considered though , canada is having a heck of an olympics . as of this posting we have 19 medals . i think thats the best we have ever done . quite a few golds and silvers too . well done team canada ! you have earned a few more sausages . mmmmmmm

Olympic Sausages II

wow , at the end of week One we have 13 medals and are tied with the americans . thats excellent . dunno about our mens hockey team though . hopefully they are getting all their bad luck and bad play behind them before the medal round begins . its been grim so far . the women however have been dominant . in just over an hour , they will play for gold against the swedes ! . odd that the american team didnt make it . i think it was coaching , cuz they just didnt have any fire this year . kudos to the very classy (and very cute)american women's captain . she had no excuses . she was proud and sportwomanlike . in a way its probably good for the sport of womens hockey to have a new team vying for gold , but its like in the mens game without the russians . its just not the same . congrats sweden form making it the gold medal game . i hope you wont mind leaving with silver :P

while waiting for the game to begin , please enjoy some complimentary sausages.........

Happy Valentine's Day

once again i have made it to another valentine's day unscathed . its certainly not intentional , but in all the years that i have been on this planet , i have never been involved with someone on february 14th . its odd , cuz generally this kinda corporate-invented holiday usually leaves me cold , but i think a day of romantic tomfoolery could be be kinda fun . you could express your love thru poems . you could tell her that you love her with greeting cards . you could spend an evening curled up on the couch and watch her favourite show and you could give her a series inspired greeting card . you could give each other cute little pet names . unfortunately this site doesnt work if you enter in just a question mark

*alas*

oh well . maybe next year

Movies

Things were really going well in my bid to see all the oscar nominees , but that has taken a bit of a stumble . The chronic dizziness i had 2 yrs ago has returned . i had one hour of lost time . i dont know if i blacked out or not , so driving over to theatres is , for now , out of the question . but i do have a backlog of movies i have seen to review . i will try and get to the rest thru dvd rentals or if the dizziness ceases .

Brokeback Mountain - you've heard all the jokes by now . so did i , but you cant judge something if you havent seen it . is it a good movie ? sure . should it win an oscar ? i dont think so , unless its for best score . the music is pretty catchy and easily identifiable . to me it had all the elements of a chick flick except with two guys . a nice touch was that the hetero sex was just as clumsy as the gay sex and that the movie wasnt preachy . it was a story told truthfully . in fact my gripe was the cinematography , i know that this year the trend was grainy muted colours , but the locations where they shot were gorgeous and we didnt get to see the beauty

Junebug - what a nifty little film this was . cultures mildly clash as a guy return home to the south with his sophisticated wife . the film explores the differences in the way ppl interact and the strong cast is totally believable . i even think that amay adams just may be my choice for the oscar . this is a small indie film that ppl should check out . if you live in the american south , let me know if the people in the movie seemed authentic . i'm curious about that

Me , You and Everyone We Know - this is another small indie film that explores how ppl get along in spite of themselves . it revolves around a group of lonley people who are yearning for more with out being to drippy about it . it is not a great film by any means , but it is enjoyable . the characters are very quirky , but their quirkiness is treated with well acted honesty

Cinderella Man - whats happened to ron howard ? . ever since apollo 13 he has steadily been making worse movies . not that this movie is terrible , it isnt . its just very very deriviative of all the boxing movies ever made . imagine raging bull with out the swearing and a happy home life . thats this movie . the flow of the movie also gets interupted with gimmicky camera effects . the story is sooooo predictable and the acting is ordinary . wait for tv

Mrs Henderson Presents - speaking of predicatble . if you have seen a period movie about british theatres , then you have seen this movie and it was probably done better in the one you have already seen . judy dench is the same awful bigotted cow she always is. i have no idea why she was nominated . the movie tries to save itself by delivering a message of tolerance at the end , but honestly , you'll most likely still be shuddering at the memory of seeing bob hoskins naked . ew

Enron - The Smartest Men in the Room - thsi film is ver interesting and the relase of the dvd is timed well for the start of the actual trial . if you've ever wondered what the fuss was about , this film takes you through the scandal step by step with absolutely no political bias . its a story about greed and how greed is a corrupting force . whats the most scary thing about this film is it reminds you that the people who carried out the scams on orders from management are still out there working . makes you wonder what they will get up too next . everyone should see this film

The Corpse Bride - this was a enjoyable romp through the underworld . its tim burton at his animated best . it is a love story and a sly commentary on snobbery and prudishness , delivered entertainingly . despite the title , this film is not creepy , but amusing . it is well designed visually and the story is helped out by a strong voice cast . good fun

Off The Map - i did not enjoy this film at all . i had heard about it from several people who had raved about it , but i did not get involved with any of the character's lives . this was surprising , cuz the cast was so good . maybe it was because i know ppl who live off the grid and they arent as depressed and f-d up as these people were . i found no charm in their depression and i really wondered why it would cause a character to reminisce fondly about it .

The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill - this film was rather charming , but it probably belongs on animal planet rather than a movie theatre . it was fascinating to see a thriving flock of parrots in a mojor community like san francisco and interesting to see a man fanatically involved with them . the best thing to happen to him was prolly when he was evicted by his lying landlords , but the time we get to see him merge his life with the bird's is worth seeing . i did get a little tired of the film towards the end , but still enjoyed it

Murderball ! - how can you go wrong with a documentary about wheel chair rugby ? you cant really . this film goes further though . its about perseverance , loyalty and betrayal . its about overcoming obstacles and living as full a life as you possibly can . after seeing this , you should ask yourself whether your life is as full as these guys . if it isnt , you better get out there and do something about it . you dont have the exuces they could use but dont

Heights - a small indie film revolving around the artistic community in new york . the acting was very good , but the delivery of the film let you know it was once a stage play . there was something off about the translation to the big screen . it was however a good story , with a twist that could have been more of a surprise

Elizabethtown - i was very disappointed with this film . i wanted to like it , but i just couldnt . i think the real probklem was that it was more than one film , perhaps even three , thrown into a blender and made into one film . if they had completely eliminated the funerary content of this movie and made it a love story between the orlando bllom and kirsten dunst , you would have had something great . the family reunion scenes were very annoying and horribly acted . you didnt need to explore why he went back home . all you needed to do was let the relationship flourish along the wild roadtrip . i'd like to see that film . not this one . it was a jumbled mess

Born Into Brothels - wow . this film is incredibly affecting . and not in hte way you'd think it would be just looking at the title . the film follows the lives of a group of kids who are the children of prostitutes in calcuttas ghettos who are united by photography . their observations of their world are amazing and what they do with the pictures is inspiring and wonderful . it won last years academy award for documentary and i can see why . do not miss this one

Wallace & Gromit - Curse of the WereRabbit - finally nick park has been goven the money to make a ful length movie on his own terms . unlike chicken run , this movie ignores all the hollywood cliches and is just a sweet and charming eccentric adventure . park gives his plastiscene characters and incredible array of emotional depth , proved if you consider that gromit doesnt talk yet conveys the most information throughout the movie . the story is fun and kooky and is for all ages . only a real grump would not enjoy this movie . there is talk of them making another w&g movie and if they do , my only minor complaint with this movie is that it really needed more of a villain . the movie would only be more suspenseful and funny with a greater sense of villainy . still this movie is a joy to watch

if i see anymore movies , i'll let ya know . in the mean time i'll let the walls spin around me . wheeeeeeeeee

Spring has Sprung ! (candadians only)

did you have a happy Groundhog Day ? i did . i always do . there does seem to be yet another dispute between us and the americans though . it seems our groundhogs didnt agree with theirs . as of this posting , Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow , where as three of canada's best known ground hogs , Ontario's Wiarton Willie , Manitoba's Brandon Bob , Alberta's Balzac Billy all say that spring is just around the corner . out here in BC we used to have a prognosticating duck , but he hasnt been heard from in several years . i guess we wont know for sure if winter is over , but hey , this is bc , its always warmer out here

Late Breaking News ! Shubenacadie Sam saw his shadow too . well i guess the maritime provinces will join our american friends in shivering for the next couple of months while we'll be warm . we'll try not to rub it in
