a bunch of cool ones this week . Enjoy !
it came down to *heads* movies and *tails* sausages
this awful rainy winter we are having has made it possible to see a bunch of movies . the best thing about this is 2005 was a really good year for cinema
Walk the Line - a lot has been made about this film in the same way a lot was made about last year's Ray . like last year i wasnt all that thrilled about this movie . i didnt dislike it as much as ray , but it was just a formula entertainer movie you have seen 100 times before . it was well shot and well acted , although ppl touting joaquin phoienix and reese witherspoon for oscars is a bit much . if the movie was about fictional singers , that would be different . not once did i think that either reminded me of johnny cash or june carter . i think this movie's greatest fault is that it was produced by the cash family . every thing had that revisionist glow to it . i think the life they actually led was far more interesting than this movie potrayed . instead we get a formulaic story
Good Night & Good Luck - this was a well acted take on mccarthyism and media which tries to show you the seeds of how media has been spun away from the truth by vested interests and how that loss is a severe damage to a society . it is moralistic without going overboard about it and if you dont know this story , you should . i was somewhat peeved throughout the movie by their choice of shooting in black & white . i love black & white for the really cools things it enables you to do with lighting to present moods . george clooney directs a strong ensemble cast through the story capably , but a better director would have brought it alive with cinematography . that would have made the movie great . this way its just good .
Hustle and Flow - this movie was quite a diamond in the rough . its about a group of poor kids , who try to rise above their poverty and make a rap record . not really my scene , but this movie made it interesting for me . the movie explores the motivations and influences present in the kids everyday lives , without delving into gangsta cliches or rags to riches formulas . the movie likes its characters and the story is better for it. it is sweet , compelling , well acted and worth checking out
8 Mile - after seeing Hustle & Flow , this movie was recommended to me . i had heard good things . it has a good cast , but it was terrible in comparison . the plot was formulaic and i never once cared for the main charaters at all . it was everything that hustle and flow avoided . dont waste your time
The Constant Gardener - from the novel by john lecarre , this is a good little story about politcial and business corruption in africa . shot in kenya , this movie is well acted and beautiful to look at . it is also one of the best adaptations of lecarre onto the big screen . the movie holds your attention with an intriguing plot . a strong cast + a good story = a good movie
b>Grizzly Man - did ya ever see the guy who went on letterman who spent his summers living with grizzly bears in alaska ? well this is a documentary about him by werner herzog . it uses timothy treadwell's own footage to show you how he lived , his descent into madness and the days leading up to his death from bear mauling . this movie is compelling stuff . the movie pulls no punches . there is nothing glossed over . it is raw and all the complexities of his life are laid in front of you . the scenery and grizzly footage are spectacular and so is this movie . an incredible movie
Lord of War - yayy nicholas cage is back (hopefully) . years ago cage was a pretty good barometer for whether a movie was worth seeing . he took the indy route and took better parts in smaller movies . then he went off and started makeing big budget formula nonsense . this movie is hopefully his return to better films . its the story of an immigrant who rises up to become a weapons dealer in the go go reagan 80s . it is a matter of fact look at how ppl on all sides of the political spectrum can create a climate where life isnt as important as making a buck . the movie is fun but also has a good message . welcome back nick , i hope you stick around
Amelie - this is one of the most beautiful films of the last 10 years . it is the whimsical story of a french girl who lifts herself up by trying to help others help themselves up . the story is quirky and lovely . it is an eccentric story shot with amazing cinematographic precision . its in french , so there are subtitles , but that should not stop you from seeing this wonderful movie . well acted , great story , well shot . what more do you want
Flight Plan - ppl kept telling me that i had to see this movie and my only question is why ? if you like predictable formulas with lots of holes in the plot , then perhaps this movie is for you . this movie had no suspense , no mystery , no action and one of the most unbelieveable premises i have ever seen . a good cast , but wasted in a lame movie
The Aristocrats - its a family act ..... (insert the grossest things a family could do to one another , here) ..... and what do you call yourselves .....*tada*..... the aristocrats ! . this movie chronicles a classic joke comedians use to humour each other in the green room . sure this movie is vulgar , but thats not the point . the movie is about the journey the joke takes and there are many comedians who give there take and strategies on its telling , some better than others . the movie is very funny throughout and its worth it just to see bob saget tell his version
The Exorcism of Emily Rose - imagine if you took the movie , the exorcist , took out the scary effects , cut the budget and put the people on trial in a courtroom where the rules of jurisprudence dont apply . you would wind up with this movie . the final exorcism is never even shown . did they run out of money ? this movie was just bad . i guess they were going for a pro religious thing here , but that just got in the way of the story . a waste of good actors and film stock
Thumbsucker - i may just have left the best for last on this list . i had not even heard of this movie before , but something told me i should check it out . this is a true diamond in the rough . it follows the angst filled life of a young guy about to graduate form high school , leave his disfunctinal and head out into the real world . sounds familiar right ? this movie delivers a lot more however . it pokes fun at at life and the industries that have risen up to help people to deal with things they dont need help for . it reminds you that life has its ups and downs and there is only so much you can do except get on with living life , instead of trying to explain it or treat it . it is a sweet funny story and the cast is just excellent . this is a film that deserves a greater audience and it has me eager to read the book it was based on . check it out
Enjoy !!
Today is election Day in Canada . if the polls are correct enough canadians have been duped by the social conservatives and the party of bigots will assume power . it is likely that they will only hold a minority government , which is good , cuz maybe ppl will recognise that harper wants to lead us along the same destructive path as the united states . militarisation at the exense of social compassion . intolerance versus acceptance . maybe as they try to introduce the same devisive hurtful legislation , ppl will wake up and see them for what they are , the antithesis of what it means to be canadian

the rain let up for the weekend , though the papers and the meteorologists say that the sunny saturday we had actually constitutes rain . you'd thnk when i spent a couple hours down on the beach in the sun in just a tshirt or when i had to draw the curtains during the football game cuz the sun was glaring off the tv , that it would have been a tip off that it didnt rain , but i guess some people just want a new rain record regardless . makes one pine for the days when news was factual *sigh*

its official . 2 more days of this crappy weather and we have set a new record for continuous days of rain . for bc , thats saying a lot . it has , however , given me a chance to catch up on some movies
Batman Begins
i really enjoyed this movie and i hope they can keep the same cast and crew around to make a couple more . unlike previous movies , they dont put all their efforts into special effects . this movie actually has a story and it works . it is dark and moody , just like the comic books and special effects are only there when necessary to the plot . throw in michael caine gary oldman and morgan freeman and you have something . christian bale is good as bruce wayne , but if katie holmes' character is killed off , a sequel would only benefit . fun stuff
Broken Flowers
jim jarmusch films arent for everybody , but i really like them . bill murray stars in this one as a man who is forced to revisit past loves in search of a son he may or may not have at the urgings of his nutty nextdoor neighbour/sleuth wannabe . the movie follows the journey of past loves from 20 years in the past and the results are sad , comic , lonely and always poignant . jarmusch as usual is in no hurry to finish the journey , the camera often lingers over a scene and really creates an emotional experience that you take away . that is the part that is not for everyone . the cast gives a strong performance and a particular standout was sharon stone , who i thought was very good in a small part .
Crash
for the first 15 minutes of this , i was saying to myself , 'yeah america is a very bigoted society . people of colour are treated just horribly in a country that claims to be the standard bearer for liberty and isnt , but am i gonna have to sit through another hour of this ?' luckily this movie's plot is heavily front loaded . the racism is necessary to pay off the rest of the film . there is no gushy feel good message either . this movie is an intricate portrait of american racism . subtle or not . it is beautifully shot and the ensemble cast is terrific . this movie should have received more notice as it is a movie people should see and hopefully learn from . terrific
The Brothers Grimm
this movie was very disappointing . i had heard that before seeing it , but being a terry gilliam fan , i had to check it out in hopes that people didnt get it or that it was too subversive or something . sadly this was not the case . it really was a movie that didnt know what it wanted to be and the fault for that lies firmly on the shoulders of gilliam . its like he couldnt decide whether to make a wacky comedy or a good adventure , so he tried to do both and failed . the movie may have also been hindered by budget limitations . all through it you could see touches of gilliam that with a few hundred thousand more here and there , could have been a lot cooler . even still , the story wouldnt have made it worth it . it probably sounded great at the original concept meetings , but it just didnt turn into anything very good
Last Days
from the ridiculous to the sublime . this movie is very good and the complete opposite of the previous film in every way . this movie is a fictional (kinda) look at the last days of kurt cobain , before he comitted suicide . this movie requires a lot of patience , but you know gus van sandt is going to make it worth while . the movie explores the disappointments and the loneliness of a tortured soul who is tired of being used by others . surrounded by people who he doesnt want in his life and no chance of it changing . van sandy uses music asa counterpoint to the silence that dominates most of the film . it gives you the sense of the genius that was borne out of talent that was surrounded by people with thier hands out . intense and beautiful , but ultimately sad . an excellent movie
Sin City
COOOOOOOOOOOOL . this movie is totally COOOOOOOOOOL . not cool . not kewl . COOOOOOOOOOL . i really liked this movie . it took the comic book (sorry but i just cant call them graphic novels lol) series Sin City by frank miller and brings them to life . this movie was obviously made by people with a deep affection for the comics. there isnt a second where you cant hit pause on the dvd and nor see something that you could imagine seeing as a drawing . the technical colouring and digital weditting must have taken ages , but they have managed to create a new world for the viewer to visit , where thre very film noir stories are intermingles into a great motion picture experience . kick ass visuals and music and an excellent cast makle this movie one you should not miss . especially the section with mickey rourke . its nice to see him doing a good movie again . his scenes to me were the most memorable in a very memorable movie
Wedding Crashers
this movie was a bit of a disappointment for me . i like owen wilson and the concept of a movie about to guys crashing weddings to meet girls sounded like a good one . it just wasnt as good as it could have been . it wasnt bad . it was just too formulaic and predictable . it wasnt an intelligent comedy and it suffered for it . if it were to come on tv and there was nothing better on , i'd say watch it and it would be somewhat entertaining . just dont go out of your way for it
The 40 Year Old Virgin
this was another movie i was kinda disappointed in , but it is much better than wedding crashers . there are a lot of funny scenes throughout the movie and great performances by the cast . it too kinda fell into the formula plot trap and again made it less than it could have been . this one makes you laugh a lot and that aint all bad . good dvd extras too
Munich
this movie coulda been a whole lot better if steven spielberg hadnt directed it . i dunno what it is with him and serious subject matter . maybe he gets too close . i dunno what it is , but this is another movie where he assumes the audience are idiots and has to waste valuable time and suspense enforcing characters moods . this movie is long and would have been a whole lot better if it was an hour shorter . everytime , the plot starts picking up , he drags everything to a screeching halt to needlessly show that a guy missing his wife . throw in some really shaky camera work and posing extras and you start to wonder if this movie had to be made in a short time limit and on the cheap . there are all kinds of bad scenes . 2 guys shoot a security guard , a crowd 30 feet away rushes at them and they stand there with an opps we screwed up look . these arent exactly the actions of professional assassins . spielberg tries to humanize all the assassins and it doesnt help the plot . just makes you shake your head and wonder why they didnt do much research . i happened to find one site where ex isaraeli agents were laughing about how the movie got things wrong about the character of the assassin . that along with people's families and an absolutely ridiculous scene where the guy is making love to his wife while reliving the events of the munish athletes being killed and you get an idea why this movie isnt very good .
if we get more rain and it look slike we will , i'm sure i'll see a movie or two more and review em
i guess a couple of sausages must have rolled off the plate . i got them before the 15 second rule kicked in , so they are still good to eat .

howdy folks
hope you had a terrific holidays . i did , although it was a very wet couple of weeks over at the cabin . i dont know how much rain fell , but the lake rose 12 feet and it was day after day after day of torrential rainfall . i hardly took any pics due to this nasty weather , but there was one upside , it did give me the chance to watch a bunch of movies . i dont think i saw any movies at all this fall , so in case you had wondered if i had stopped doing blog reviews here , i have finally watched a couple to quickly review . with Mooscar season quickly approaching , i will start seeing likly to be nominated movies and will post what i think of them . these are what i have seen recently......
Alexander - this movie was much maligned by the critics and i am not sure why . its not the best movie i have ever seen , but it certainly isnt the worst . the life of alexander the great is a lot to cram into a movie , but oliver stone (who i have never been a big fan of) picked what he wanted to tell and did it well . good acting and good story well shot . give it a chance
Starsky & Hutch - this movie was really funny . oh sure , if you just had a tape of old tv reruns of the show that would be really funny too , but this movie poked fun at a lot of things , but did it in a fond manner . owen wilson and ben stiller are becoming quite the enduring comedy duo .
HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy - i was a little nervous about watching this movie . i am a big fan of the novels and the BBC tv series by douglas adams and was wondering if they would be worthy of them . the movie was quite good , but all the way thru it , i kept thinking about the original tv zaphod and marvin and in a way i wish i could have come at this movie without having seen the others . i think this movie stands up on its own . i think it was good if you hadnt read or seen the others . it was funny . thats a plus . i guess i just wish adams was still with us writing more wild adventures
Madagascar - this movie was your typical family animation . it was well animated , had laughs , a goody goody story , good voices , yet i still wonder if it wasnt too formulaic . with all the animation technology available to them , i wish the makers had taken some chances and been more creative and innovative . it wasnt bad . it was good , but the same kinda good we have all seen too many times before . wheres chuck jones when we need him ?
The Interpreter - this was a pretty good thriller set against the backdrop of the united nations . the intrigue revolves around mass murder , corruption , a UN interpreter and the secret service and is told at a good suspenseful pace . sean penn and nicole kidman provide strong performances in this well directed movie
March of the Penguins - how can i say anything bad about penguins? c'mon . they're so cute ! this movie is pretty cool . it follows one year in the breeding cycle of emperor penguins at the south pole and the terrible things they must endure just to survive as a species . the film is beautifully shot . they capture the beauty of antarctica as well as it very coldness and isolation . just thinking about the scenes of the pengys huddling amongst the frigid white wind gives me the shivers . cool movie , literally
Vanity Fair - period piece/chick flick that took a very bland approach to the novel . i was surprised they portrayed becky's scheming rise into society so blandly . theres no fun in that . they director made her dull and the movie suffered for that . even mum thought so and she likes period pieces . we both liked the acting . reese witherspoon is always good . and the movie was well shot. they just chose to make the story dull
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - this was a very cool movie . the makers took a big chance remaking the classic gene wilder movie , but they pulled it off . johnny depp was creepily good as wonka and tim burton updated the story just enough without compromising dahl's moral intent . if i had any quibble , it was that the oompa loompa songs werent very good . can you hum one them ? i cant . dont let that scare you off . it is a good movie that you should see
The Man Who Cried - this movie is a very sad story of russian jews in wwii era europe and what they had to do in order survive . its not your typical story that you have seen too many times . it follows the story of a young girl (christina ricchi) trying to reunite with her father in america . along the way she gets involved with johnny depp , cate blanchett and john torturro . an excellent cast , well acted , interesting , but in the end sad
Syriana - this movie tries to take the very complicated problems of the middle east and explain them to ther american public as simply as they can . they do not take a politcally biased stance . they give you the goods on what mideast conflict is really all about . oil . the real problem of the movie is the roundabout way they go about telling it . the movie is muddled and blurry . i dont know if that is the directors commentary of what happening there , but when you look at the screen and only 30% is in focus , i find that annoying . the info in this movie is something americans really need to learn . i just dont think this movie is the right vehicle for the information
Capote - if you want to get a look at this year's academy award for best actor , check out philip seymour hoffman as truman capote in this movie . he is exceptional as the celebrity author as he does the research for the book , in cold blood . the guys performance is just amazing . he is capote . he stands out among a really strong cast which includes the always great chris cooper and catherine keener . the story follows the intricacies of capote relationships with the murderers and his friends . a very cool film
i prolly am missing a title or two here , but i cant think of any right now . there really isnt a horrible movie in this group that i would recommend you avoid , well maybe vanity fair , but if you like that kinda thing get the video . 2005 has turned to to be a pretty good year for movies . yay the previous few years had been terrible .
Happy New Year !!
