so the cable company calls up and offers us a free digital cable box to expand our coverage. i ask if its the same lame box that they offered us last spring which i returned because it didn't really offer us anything new . "oh no sir , now you'll be able to get all the high definition channels" . the box comes and its the same crappy box they sent us in the spring, except the picture is worse and we don't get any of the high definition channels . grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I'm too peeved to phone them today, but mannnnnnnnnnI'm annoyed

after many months of not seeing any movies, i was able to find some time to see a bunch over the holidays . here's what i thought about em..............

Fantastic Mr Fox - this movie was amazing . its funny and very very entertaining . just go see it. you wont be disappointed

Avatar - i saw the 3D version of the movie and its the best 3D has ever been. for once its nice to see a movie that lives up to the hype. it takes you to a new fantastical world and the visuals are incredible . and oh yeah, them blue chicks is really sexy . do not miss it on a big screen

Up In The Air - an entertaining movie, but the ending was a little bit of a downer. they kept trying to imply that george clooney's lifestyle wasn't fulfilling enough, while i was thinking i wish mine could be like that . the young trainee that clooney travels with isn't that great an actress, but thats more than made up for by the very sexy vera farmiga . wait for video

The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus - like any terry gilliam film, it takes a little while and perhaps another viewing or two to grasp what he had intended to do . in other words you have a great idea for a movie that does its best to accomplish the vision, but in the end is something quite disjointed and that's just a shame . in the last couple of films, he's let some of the supporting actors be a little too over the top , which i find annoying. i'm a giliam fan so i enjoyed it , but don't think a lot of people will

Invictus - clint eastwood only directs good movies . he has become a standard of cinema excellence and this story is another gem. its the true story about how nelson mandela united his country by getting blacks and whites to unite together to support their national rugby team at the rugby world cup . the cast is excellent, but its morgan freeman who masterfully portrays mandela that really makes the movie

Where The Wild Things Are - if i had liked the little kid in this movie, this would have been one of my favourite movies in years . its visually amazing and inventive and the supporting cast is awesome . i just couldn't stand max and it ruined the movie for me

The Hangover - all summer long i kept hearing how funny this movie was . to the point where it could never live up to its billing . it does have its funny moments, but i'd wait until it comes on tv

Inglourious Basterds - after i saw death proof, i started to like tarentino a little and was looking forward to seeing this, but i have to say i was disappointed . it wasn't as funny as i would have expected and the derring do that they showed in the ads and trailers never really materialized on screen . everything was there for a great movie, but tarentino's need to linger in banalities got in the way of the plot . its too bad cuz it could have been great

Star Trek - this movie was awesome . i had waited all autumn until mum got her new tv for xmas to see this film and am i ever glad i waited . this movie is beautifully shot . its gorgeous to look at and the movie deftly tells the tale of how the classic star trek characters came together without being schmaltzy . the villain's story made sense and that made the movie come together terrifically . do not miss this

after a few days of making subtle little changes, i think i am basically where i want to be with Windows 7 . so far there has been little downside to the switch and some of the new features i really like . what i like best is that explore.exe is much faster, so my music folder is there in a couple seconds . even better, my music folder is all together again on one disc . woot !

There's not going to be any sausages today as i have just finished installing a new terabyte hard drive on my computer along with Windows 7 . there are so many tiny little settings i have to use to get my puter to act they way i want it to that i havent had time to do any web surfing . i'm mostly completed the upgrade now and i'm taking some time to familiarize myself with Windows 7 and see if there are new and more efficient ways to help me accomplish my daily putering . here's what i'm thinking so far...............

start up/ shut down is much faster
once you get used to the new OS it does seem to make things simpler to use
all my data files made it over to the new system without incident
my music folder is all one drive again. WOOT !!

Dislikes :

it doesn't seem to recognize my subwoofer
i cant find how to 'Move' a file (drag & drop seems to only allow 'Copy')
i lost photoshop
i lost my antivirus & firewall

thats really my opinion of it at first blush . i'm sure with a little more experimenting , i'll find solutions to my dislikes . if any of you out there know of any handy tips for Windows 7 , i'd be happy to hear them . just send me an email

though everyone on the planet has some level of twititude to them, i decided to give Twitter a try . especially since reports are now saying that twitter has hit its peak and a slow decline is expected . that will help keep my streak of missing internet trends "when it was still good", shall remain intact . one of these years i am going to figure out how to use the puter socially, but in the meantime i'll be posting things as rollickster . it will probably just be *Chair Boogies* of songs that are playing on my puter or ones i stumble across (so long as i can find a decent audio link for them) . if anyone knows of cool things out there in twitterland , let me know and i'll check em out

just when the idea of upgrading to Windows 7 was becoming somewhat palatable , they screw me up again . the other day i was attempting to to use windows messenger (the only reason its even on my puter is so that my mum can video chat with my sis in England) . while attempting to connect, i was met with a forced upgrade to windows live messsenger . ok fine, i install it without all the extra crap it wants to install along with it . the install takes forever and when its done, i can't connect to messenger anymore *sigh* it took me a couple of days of sifting thru help sites until i found the culprit . this is what worked for me and it may not work for everyone, but heres my fix....

if you discover that you have Error 8000401a, follow these steps:

- start/run regedit
- expand the tree and look for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT AppID
- expand and look for the key 380689D0-AFAA-47E6-B80E-A33436FE314B
- right click that sucker and Delete It
- close regedit and messenger should now work for you , good luck

typical Microsoft, they release a product before all the bugs are worked out. i don't think i'll be upgrading to Windows 7 anytime soon. messenger had probs and its a small app , not an entire operating system *shakes head*

what a treat last night was . i packed up a picnic supper and headed down to Ambleside Park (only 5 blocks away) to sit in the grass and listen to Sheryl Crow, Neil Young & Sarah McLachlan's fund raiser for Music Outreach in schools . earlier in the day, a spot where you could peek through to the stage had been closed up , but they had also erected a giant super high def screen that was viewable from where i had planned to eat . if you didn't mind losing one Neil young song to a passing freight train, a fire truck and and ambulance buzzing about, the show went off without a hitch . you certainly couldn't beat the price

I dunno what it is lately, but i havent been sleeping well at all . whether its the heat, my stomach or just overtraining, i'm tired as hell and would kill for a good night's sleep . so pardon me if i make more typos than i usually do :p

i have been getting out at night and checking out the free concerts at the Harmony Arts Festival . i saw Jim Byrnes & The Sojourners the other night and an Indian/Celtic Fusion band, Delhi 2 Dublin, last night . both were cool shows . its nice to take your supper down to the park which is only 5 minutes away and groove to some cool tunes . it looks like theres a couple more shows that i will be going to check out in the remaining five days . maybe i'll see you there . say hi if you see me !

Another beautiful day in Vancouver . after a couple of brutally hot days with no wind , the temperatures have eased back down to just about perfect . just down the street from me, The Harmony Arts Festival is underway and tonight the sunset concert wil be Jim Byrnes, who is a really excellent blues guy as well as a pretty decent actor . i can hear the shows from here, but i'm going to wander down anyway and sit on the grass and soak up the sounds . if you see me, say hi !

mannnnn you should have seen the sky last night . right at sunset a gigantic thunderhead moved over my building and let loose hours of thunder & lighting. the sky was an incredible colour (this pic doesnt quite do it justice) . i was really surprised that with all the static energy in the air , they went ahead with the fireworks . i didnt see any massive explosions so i guess they went off okay, but it was hard to tell which was more impressive , the fireworks or the lightning .
